Double Gold for Glyn's Shooters!
Glyn Pistol Champions Deliver Another Double Gold at National Schools’ Final
Following last year’s successes, Glyn School successfully defended their National Schools’ Pistol Champion team and individual titles at Stoke Mandeville Stadium on Wednesday 17 January 2018.
With over 500 competitors from 280 different schools across England, Wales and Scotland, Glyn sharp-shooters have become National Schools’ Pistol Champions for the second year in a row!
Emma O’Neil (13 Carew), Kieran Gall (13 Merton) and James Miller (13 Carew) represented Glyn School after qualifying in first place in the South England regional tournament. Glyn competed against some of the top pentathlete and shooting schools in Great Britain: Millfield, Leweston, Plymouth College, Ellesmere College, Durham School, Exeter College, Lockerbie Academy from Scotland and St Ambrose College in Wales.
The team competition required all three of their individual scores to count, and they certainly delivered on the day. Emma shot a PB of 175/200, qualifying 2nd , Kieran also shot a PB of 154/200 qualifying in 8th, and James shot 181/200 qualifying 1st for the Individual Championship Final. This excellent team performance total of 510 gave Glyn School the GOLD TEAM MEDAL and crowned as ‘National Team Champions’, a good 60 points ahead of Silver medallists, St John’s Leatherhead, and 110 points ahead of Bronze medallists, Ellesmere College.
After the celebrations of winning the team event, both Emma and James had to settle their nerves for the Individual Finals which they had both qualified for. The top pistol shooters in the country went head to head in a tense knock out shoot off. Excellent shooting all round, with Emma coming 8th; impressive for a Rifle specialist. James, defending last year’s individual title, set a new schools’ final record of 229.4 and finished in 1st place, giving him a GOLD INDIVIDUAL MEDAL and crowned as ‘British School Senior Champion 2018’.
These results are particularly impressive as Emma and Kieran both specialise in Rifle, with James specialising in Pistol. Emma shoots in the GB Junior Rifle squad, Kieran is Number 1 in GB U21 Rifle Target Sprint Run and Shoot, and James is Number 1 in GB U21 Pistol team.
James has been selected to represent Great Britain at the European Pistol Championships and Youth Olympics qualifiers in Hungary in February 2018. Both Kieran and James will represent Great Britain at the World Junior Championships in Germany in June 2018 and try to improve on the official British Records they both hold for their Olympic disciplines; exciting opportunities for both students, being up against tough world competition.
Well done to all three Glyn sharp-shooters for the fantastic achievement of being National Schools’ Champions two years in a row; an achievement they can be very proud of.
