International Week Extravaganza
The whole school came together for our annual topic, the theme of which was International Week. It was lovely to start the week with the children in different clothes on Monday and it was interesting to learn about some of the traditional costumes being worn.
On Wednesday we were very excited to welcome some special visitors into school to share our story time with us. Thank you to all the mums and dads who came to read to us in a different language.
For the week each class had been allocated a country to investigate and they used stories, pictures and non-fiction texts to find out information.
Fernlea Drive Class used the story book ‘Grace and Family’ to learn about life in The Gambia. They made a whole class collage map of Africa, created flags, masks, paintings and wonderful pieces of writing which they proudly displayed.
Rose Street Class travelled to Thailand using the story ‘The Umbrella Queen’ as inspiration. They learnt about what visitors to the country could do, met an elephant artist, made boats like the ones they saw at the floating market and designed their own Thai hats.
Peach Street Class headed off to Spain where they learnt about famous artists such as Gaudi and Picasso as well as creating coconut truffles and becoming World Cup correspondents for the Spanish football team. The class used the traditional story ‘Ferdinand the Bull’ to learn more about Spain which was a thought provoking look at whether bullfighting is a good idea or not.
Denmark Street used the story diary ‘Are We There Yet?’ to help them explore Australia. They learnt to play a digeridoo, flew boomerangs in the meadow and made delicious Anzac biscuits.
Our oldest children in Milton Road Class used ‘Biblioburro’ as an introduction to Colombia. They were inspired to create fact files about Colombia and design menus and carnival costumes. They were very interested in the currency and made their own pesos.
We ended the week with open classrooms for parents and carers to share our learning as well as a delicious buffet of international foods kindly provided by our very generous school family.
