Success at The Beacon Sixth Form 2018
Sixth-form students at The Beacon in Banstead have achieved the best A-Level results the school has seen for many years.
Collectively, they made significant increases in the numbers of top grades, with four students achieving the highest A* Grade and with 17 per cent being awarded A*/A grades.
This means that several students can access the top universities in the country. Daisy among them, will go on to read medicine at Manchester University and three students will read Maths at Russell Group universities.
Mrs Naomi Albrecht, Director of Sixth Form, said: “Once again, the students were determined to succeed and achieve their very best.
“They not only secured their next steps in their education but also gave the Sixth Form its best results. I am so proud of them all.”
Mr Keith Batchelor, Headteacher at the school which is a member of the GLF multi academy trust, added: “We are delighted by the huge success for our students that these grades represent.
“After a number of years at The Beacon School, it is great to see our students taking their next steps out to university, apprenticeships and employment.
“We are especially pleased with the jump in top grades, which has opened up highly competitive places at elite universities to study Medicine, Maths and Biochemistry for a number of our students.
“We are delighted to see our students do so well and go on to exciting futures.”
A total of 39 per cent of grades were within the A*- B range, another upward trend, and the A*- C rate was 63 per cent, another strong performance. At BTEC level, there was a continued 100 per cent pass rate, with greater numbers of distinctions and merits than in previous years.
A number of our students who decided not to apply for university have secured excellent apprenticeships and work placements.
New University of Bath student Georgia had particular praise for Beacon maths teacher Katherine Dutia. She said: “We’ve had her for seven years now and she’s probably the reason I love maths.”
Beacon pupil Emmanuel,18, is one of the country’s top junior pole vaulters, and has combined his training with his studies.
He said: “It’s been quite tough at times and I don’t think I’d have achieved it without the support of the sixth-form staff.”
There were particular student success stories: A* grades awarded to Georgia and Louise in Mathematics, Chloe in English Literature and Elizabeth in Art
Notable results included: A*AA for Georgia, who is going to University of Bath to read Mathematics and statistics; AAA for Leah, who is also going to Bath, to read Biochemistry; AAA for Daisy, who is going to the University of Manchester to read Medicine; AAB for Jacob, who is going to Exeter to read Mathematics; A*AB for Louise who is going to Lancaster University to read Mathematics; A*BB for Chloe who is going to the University of Kent to read History; ABB for Jack who is going to University of Sussex to read Mathematics; a Distinction* for Ellie in BTEC Sport; Two Distinctions for Rafa and Amie for BTEC Sport.
