Transforming Outdoor Learning at Warren Mead: The Quad Garden Project
Back
Through a successful application to the Foundation, Warren Mead Infant and Junior Schools have transformed an unused, overgrown space into a vibrant outdoor area, now known as The Quad. This incredible new space is a hub of creativity, learning, and tranquillity, benefiting every child in the school.
The children played an active role in designing The Quad, which now features:
-
A sensory walkway
-
Vegetable patches
-
A reading log circle
-
A wildlife pond
Each class has a dedicated gardening slot each half term, allowing students to engage with nature and witness seasonal changes first-hand. They’ve especially enjoyed harvesting vegetables they’ve helped grow!
In addition to structured gardening activities, The Quad is open during lunchtimes, offering a calm and quiet retreat—particularly beneficial for children with additional needs. During lessons, it also serves as a space for movement breaks, supporting self-regulation and well-being.
Looking ahead, the school plans to enhance the experience even further. Next year, they aim to integrate their home-grown vegetables into the school kitchen, giving students the opportunity to see the full farm-to-fork process. They’re also planning to introduce pond-dipping equipment to explore the wildlife pond more deeply.
Educational signage has already been installed to help children understand the various features of the garden. A new music area has also been added, sparking creativity and fun!
Thank you to our supporters for making this transformation possible. The Quad is now a wonderful sensory and wildlife garden, inspiring curiosity and connection in every child who steps into it.
