Music for Youth Proms
BackThe Music for Youth Proms is an annual celebration of young musical talent which is held at The Royal Albert Hall and took place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings last week. This year 100 children from GLF Schools had the opportunity, via our Foundation, to perform at this prestigious event.
The theme of the Proms this year was #ThankYourMusicTeacher and it featured its biggest ever creative project, with a medley of songs written by one of our Foundation ambassadors, radio presenter, composer and Music for Youth Ambassador (and former Glyn student), Jack Pepper.
Children from The Vale, Cordwalles and Chestnut Park performed some of Jack’s compositions as part of a massed ensemble, with Grace, from The Vale School performing a solo piece alongside Jack as part of the finale on both evenings.
This was an incredible opportunity for all the children, many of whom had never been to London, never been on the Tube, had never seen the Royal Albert Hall and certainly had not performed on stage in front of thousands of people. The power of music was evident, and inspired all that were attended the event, whether performing or watching. Opportunities like this are ones that remain with people forever, and who knows what it will inspire the children to go on to do.
This quote, from a child at Chestnut Park, summarises the impact of such an event perfectly: “Mrs Jacob, whoever organised this please can you thank them because this is the best day of my life!”
A special thank you to all the staff at Cordwalles, The Vale and Chestnut Park for making the event happen for the children at their schools, the long days and late nights were definitely worth it!
The GLF Schools' Foundation exists to ensure all 17,000 young people within our schools have access to the same opportunities and experiences regardless of their financial background.
