Inspectors found Meridian High School to be a “good” school in all four areas of inspection when they visited in January.
The report highlights how “leaders have ensured that the school ethos of ‘present the best version of yourself’ is central to the daily life of the school” and recognised that students typically feel that “behaviour has ‘drastically changed’ for the better” with the school having “gone through a monumental transition” of improvement. This is testament to all staff who “have high expectations for behaviour” and have created an environment where “pupils receive the help they need”, they feel safe and build warm and friendly relationships, where bullying is rare and incidents are acted upon quickly.
Inspectors praised the ambitious curriculum offering, where reading is prioritised, and recognised that teaching is clear and ensures student understanding. They complimented the PHSE (personal, social, health and economic) education programme noting that “leaders have ensured that all pupils, in particular those with SEND, can fully contribute”. Inspectors recognised the support given to children with SEND, ensuring they work towards the same curriculum as their peers and those with complex needs receiving specialist support for some lessons in the Pinnacle Centre.
The report noted that “pupils learn how to speak with confidence and to present their learning with pride (which) prepares pupils well for the next stage of their education or training”, and students receive individual support in applying for further education and apprenticeships.
Inspectors highlighted the opportunities to learn outside of the classroom, including geography trips and the Year 7 outdoor activities residential programme. Students also take part in a weekly debate about current affairs and through this they “discuss moral issues and learn about fundamental British values such as respect and tolerance”.
Amy Anderson, Headteacher, commented “it has been an absolute pleasure leading our school the past few years through the Covid 19 pandemic and through our journey of rapid school improvement. In terms of next steps, it is very much onwards and upwards for Meridian High School as we continue to embed our strategies and focus on our priorities moving forward.”
