Windmill Primary School this week proudly welcomed Clive Jones, Member of Parliament for Wokingham, to discuss the school's journey towards their Gold Rights Respecting School Award.

This award, given by UNICEF UK, recognises schools that have fully embedded children's rights into their ethos and curriculum, ensuring every child is respected, valued, and heard.

During his visit, Clive Jones MP met with pupils and staff to learn more about the school’s dedication to promoting children's rights.

He also saw first-hand how the school had actively taken part in the UNICEF UK ‘Out Right’ Campaign, which empowers children and young people to use their voices to stand up for their rights and influence important issues. The School Council and Eco-Committee held a meeting to explain the important work they do across the school.

Pupils from the school had the opportunity to ask Clive Jones MP questions related to issues that are important to them. Matvii, aged 6, asked, ‘’ How can you help to make sure all children can access sports and hobbies, even if some children do not have much money?’’

Clive Jones MP said:

“It was a pleasure to meet all the pupils and teachers at Windmill Primary School in Woosehill. I learnt so much and will have my own homework to complete because of this visit. The School Council will be writing to me with some of the fantastic ideas that they want me to raise in Parliament and elsewhere and some of them will be visiting Parliament very soon. The pupils asked me an enormous variety of really good questions.

“They also showed how committed they all are to Windmill as a Rights Respecting School – and what this means in practice.”

“We were delighted to welcome Clive Jones MP to our school and share our efforts in championing children’s rights,” said Windmill Primary Headteacher Nicola Cotter.

“Our journey towards achieving the Gold Rights Respecting School Award is instrumental in creating a safe and inclusive environment for all children.”

Windmill Primary School remains committed to upholding the values of the Rights Respecting Schools initiative and inspiring children to become active and informed citizens of the future.
