Cordwalles Junior School donates books to 150 Ugandan children
BackOver 500 books have been donated to a school in Uganda by Cordwalles Junior School in an inspiring display of charity designed to promote reading in the country.
The books are part of reading schemes to help children learn to read English, and plans are already forming for another donation of 500 books at a later date.
Kizito Lesenge School in Uganda has over 150 children in just one class, which is led by one teacher.
Cordwalles School not only plans to send more books when possible, but also has ambitions to set up a pen pal project between their students and pupils in Uganda to foster cultural exchange.
Abi Moore, Headteacher at Cordwalles, commented: “It was truly inspiring for our pupils to be able to give something back in this way and we know just how much these books were gratefully received. We’re looking forward to donating more when we can arrange transport for the books, as well as increasing our links with the school in Uganda through other ways, such as a pen pal scheme.
“Our pupils got such a sense of purpose from giving back and we’re all keen to continue to do what we can to help”.
Theo, a Year 6 student from Cordwalles Junior School, said: “It felt good to be able to help out the children in Africa with books we don’t need any more. Hopefully we can say hello to them soon on the computer and donate more things when we can”.
