Congratulations to the U11 boys’ football team from Warren Mead Junior School who recently won a thrilling match against Whitgift, one of the most famed sporting schools in the south of England, to be crowned County Cup winners.

Former Whitgift pupils who have played football at the highest level include Callum Hudson-Odoi of Nottingham Forest, and Germany international Jamal Musiala, which shows the standard Warren Mead were coming up against, but they were certainly not intimidated, as they began brightly and soon opened the scoring.

That was how things remained until shortly before half-time, when Whitgift levelled things up and then, right on the half-time whistle, headed in a second for a morale-boosting lead at the break.

They continued where they left off after the restart, helped by confusion in the Warren Mead defence which set up their third goal.

But the game turned when a volley went in off the underside of the bar, giving Warren Mead hope, and that turned the game their way as suddenly they had all the momentum.

With less than five minutes left, a shot from the edge of the box made the score 3-3, and then with extra time beckoning, another shot was fired home into the bottom corner, securing a dramatic win.

Congratulations to the players and staff, on and off the pitch, from Warren Mead for their fantastic efforts all year, culminating in such an exciting and deserved win against highly-rated opponents.
